LU5 Q&A

Artificial Intelligence

LU5 Q&A: List

Is the Turing test reliable?

The Turing test was created by Alan Turing, a test to distinguish between a real human and AI. This is done by letting an interrogator ask questions to the AI, and when the interrogation session is over and they are still unable to figure out whether the entity answering the questions is a human or an AI, then it is said that the AI would pass the Turing test. However, there are many flaws to this experiment. Menager (2018) argued that the Turing test is invalid because it does not actually measure intelligence, rather how the AI is supposed to act. For example, ELIZA was programmed to be a therapist, therefore, questions that can be asked in a therapy session would be easy for ELIZA to answer and pass the test. However, when you ask ELIZA an unrelated topic, she would not be able to answer coherently.

What are the types of Artificial Intelligence?

According to Hintze (2016), the types of Artificial Intelligence are reactive machines that can only carry out reactions such as the Deep Blue system used in playing chess. Next, limited memory AI that can recall the past like self-driving cars. There are also AI systems that develops theory of mind, which means they can think and act like humans. Lastly, AI with self-awareness, that understands and are conscious about the fact that they are AI themselves.

What are the disadvantages to artificial intelligence?

Artificial intelligence is always depicted as the bad guys in science fiction movie, wanting to end humankind as a whole. However, there are more disadvantages to the creation of AI that can impact us at this moment. Thomas (2021) stated that people will actually lose their jobs due to AI taking over mundane tasks in the factory. Besides, AI can also cause lost of privacy. ‘Deepfakes’ for example, can ruin one’s reputation by editing their face onto someone else that looks very realistic and may cause others to subsequently believe the edited deepfake. All in all, AI has it benefits and disadvantages. We as human must be wise in handling this technology.
